Prompt 6 - BYOT - How we can use social media to change the world…

I felt that we have been questioning how our use of social media like Facebook and Tumblr have affected our surroundings. I believe that is such an important question in our day and age where the use of the Internet is almost impossible to avoid. However, I think the question of if and how we employ social media to make the world a better place is crucial. In a world with perpetual disaster all around the world, I believe it is the hands of our society and especially our generation to do the most we can to aid those less fortunate around us. I think besides using social media to connect with new/old/current friends or produce an online identity, we should use social media to spread the word about causes we believe in. Wether we are avid supporters or protestors of a cause, we are given the open road to share these ideas on the Internet. You know what they say about content that is published on the Internet…it never truly disappears. So why not take a chance and publish something like a charity you support or an online petition on your social media page? Why not take the ability to spread the word, even if its to a couple friends about what you believe in? A constant concern of the Internet is that so many people abuse it in numerous negative ways. But if we truly consider the favorable aspect of the Internet, our generation could begin to start a revolution for the positive employment of the Internet (which I believe is slowly, but surely starting).

Prompt 3 - baby animals and atticus finch

#hum80

The thing I love about Tumblr is the unlimited collection of pictures and information you can find on just about any given subject. And even when you can’t find what you’re looking for, you’re encouraged to upload it and post it to share with the rest of Tumblr.  As a result, you begin to build the ultimate portrayal of yourself or who you may want to be through the content on one’s tumblr page. A tumblr page filled with pictures of fashionable individuals and articles of clothing automatically insinuate an interest in fashion, while a tumblr possessing work out pictures and text posts about their weight loss journey reveal an individual currently interested in fitness. Any tumblr page visitor automatically can assume the type of person is within the first few seconds of examining their pictures. As you can tell based on my title, two of my interests include baby animals and Atticus Finch (yep, from To Kill a Mockingbird). By posting and reposting pictures of my interest, I make it more and more clear to my page visitors what I like. Actions like “reposting” on tumblr allow for the picture to be viewed by others in the tumblr community and for the picture to travel deeper and deeper in the tumblr abyss for others to repost as well. I hope posting and reposting pictures of my interest will persuade others to “awwWwww” at the baby animals and read and watch ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ if they haven’t already.

Prompt #1 - Friendship as defined by social networks.

#hum80 Prompt 1

If social networks have influenced anything the most, I would confidently state ‘friendships’. Social networks like Facebook, Twitter, and even Tumblr are all different ways that friends can use to communicate to one another without being face-to-face. The idea of a “lazy friendship” would be a prime description of friendships of the social network era. Social networks are made up of thousands of ways to SIMPLY communicate. With a simply ‘like’ on someone’s Facebook post/picture, we communicate to that someone that we enjoy what they have to say or what they do in said post or picture. With a simple “retweet”, we announce our agreement with their tweet. With a simple click of the reblog or post button on Tumblr, we are able to share artifacts like images that we believe portray us or our interests best. The simplicity of these social networks may present a much easier way to get to know a friend, but it also hinders these friendships ability’s to get to know each other in person. We begin to acknowledge each other through their actions on these social networks.
